Xinhua reported on UBC researchers who developed polymer-infused concrete that is stronger than typical concrete and could reduce tire waste. They said the new mixture has the advantage over crumb rubber, a popular concrete additive, which tends to reduce the strength of concrete.
UBC civil engineering professor Nemy Banthia, who led the work, noted that China produces almost 400 million tires every year, and many go into landfills. The new concrete recipe could help use up these scrap tires.
