Big issues on table when Trudeau met Trump

Several UBC professors weighed in on Monday’s meeting between Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau.

MSN published a Maclean’s article quoting Efrat Arbel, a professor at UBC’s Peter A. Allard School of Law. Arbel said the “Safe Third Country Agreement” relies on the basic premise that both the U.S. and Canada recognize each other as safe for refugees.

In a Canadian Press story on Huffington Post and National Observer, Michael Byers, the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at UBC, said it is not surprising there was no discussion about the Arctic because Trump has not finished appointing the people who will review the current U.S. policy on the North.

UBC political science PhD candidate David Moscrop spoke to News 1130, saying the meeting will likely set the tone for future engagements.
