FortisBC complains as city phases out fossil fuels

The Vancouver Sun quoted Martin Ordonez, a UBC electrical and computer engineering professor and the Canada Research Chair for power converters for renewable energy systems.

Vancouver is aiming to phase out the use of fossil-fuel-derived natural gas. Ordonez compared the city’s policies to automotive regulations that have led to large improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

“When you think about building technology, it’s way behind automotive technology. The materials, the way they are assembled, there is so much that can be done,” Ordonez said. “I think that utilities will have to innovate to remain competitive. It doesn’t matter the type of fuel, all of them will have to innovate to remain competitive.”
