Tent cities show urgency for affordable housing needed

Penelope Gurstein, a professor in UBC’s school of community and regional planning, spoke to Surrey Now about the federal housing strategy.

She said the strategy will address the housing inequality across provinces and municipalities and noted that the federal government was more involved in housing before the 1990s. Gurstein also said the goal of tent cities is to bring awareness to the housing crisis.

“People are camping out for some reason,” she said. “They want people to understand this is critical.”
