Discussing the global fish count

Dirk Zeller, a senior researcher with the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and a contributor to the Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries, spoke to CBC’s Radio On the Coast (segment begins at 2:06:00) about the discrepancy between fish catch counts that are reported and unreported.

“Our estimates are that total catches 30 to 50 per cent higher than what the reported statistics suggest,” he said. “The most important part of this is the fact that we are actually catching more than we thought… The problematic part of it is that these catches peaked in the mid-’90s and have been declining quite strongly since.”
