Consumers question separating calves from mothers

Research by Dan Weary, a UBC professor in the faculty of land and food systems, was featured on the Australia Broadcasting Corporation.

Weary conducted a survey and found a gap between consumer and industry attitudes when it comes to separating dairy cows and their calves at birth.

“People are dissatisfied with this idea that we’re doing something which seems very unnatural — taking a baby away from its mother in the first few hours of its life, and that we need to have awful good reasons for doing that,” Weary said.
