Speculators buying farm land while exploiting tax breaks

Tsur Somerville, a real-estate expert at UBC Sauder School of Business, spoke to The Globe and Mail about the provincial law that allows the value of farmland to be judged by soil quality, rather than what an investor will pay for it.

“The regulatory process seems very lazy,” Somerville said. “Everybody gets mad when rich people aren’t paying their fair share. If we are screaming about money for education, this is money for education, left on the table.”
