China’s plan for the Arctic and a shipping centre to rival Singapore

The South China Morning Post interviewed Michael Byers, the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at UBC, for a story on China’s plan for the Arctic.

Hunchun could become an international shipping centre if business expands along Arctic shipping routes.

“All of the Arctic countries are members of the World Trade Organisation and so are open to investment from China,” Byers said, adding that Chinese companies could play a crucial role in the area. “The development of Arctic shipping routes could be advanced through foreign investment in ports and other infrastructure.”
