UBC science could fill Chalk River void

The Times Colonist mentioned UBC’s science department in a story about the closing of the Chalk River nuclear reactor in Ontario, a major medical isotope supplier.

An isotope shortage could occur because the most common type, technetium-99, has a very short half-life and cannot be stockpiled.

However, scientists working with a particle accelerator at UBC have proven that technetium can be created without a nuclear reactor.
