U.S. presidential campaign offers a study in leadership styles

Jessica Tracy, a UBC psychology professor, spoke to the Globe and Mail about the role of status hierarchies in reference to the U.S. presidential election.

In previous research, Tracy and colleagues found that would-be leaders often choose one of two paths in their quest for success: either respect or intimidation.

“Here’s a situation where there are two people explicitly trying to attain power by using exactly these two different strategies,” she said. “That’s extremely rare in American politics.”
