Link between Vancouver homelessness and high housing prices

The Globe and Mail published an op-ed co-written by Penny Gurstein, director of UBC’s School of Community and Regional Planning, about the link between high housing costs and homelessness.

Gurstein and Bernie Pauly, a University of Victoria nursing professor, cited an upcoming study which shows that rising rents, low vacancy rates, and lack of available social housing are pushing people into homelessness.

“Housing alone is not enough to solve homelessness, but we can’t ignore that the first step to addressing homelessness is a supply of housing that is safe, affordable and available to people with very low incomes,” they wrote.
