Single mother faces daunting reality of Vancouver house search

UBC sociology professor Nathanael Lauster spoke to Metro News about the struggles vulnerable people face as they search for housing in Metro Vancouver.

A 2011 study co-authored by Lauster discovered that single mothers were 14 per cent more likely to receive either a negative response or no response from landlords when they inquired about a listing compared with heterosexual couples.

“It is important that we get more rental housing stock out there for reasons like these, for groups who are already marginalized,” he said.
