Airbnb not to blame for Vancouver’s difficult rental market

Thomas Davidoff, a UBC economics professor was quoted in a Globe and Mail article on Airbnb’s role in Vancouver’s rental market.

Airbnb released a report stating that only a tiny percentage of Vancouver Airbnb hosts rent out their properties often enough to earn more money than they would from long-term renters.

“If Airbnb eats up one per cent over a period of five years, that is probably driving prices up by two per cent,” Davidoff said. “The impact just doesn’t look as big as you might think.”

Airbnb consulted Davidoff to understand the impacts of short-term rentals on rents. He was not paid for his advice.
