UBC researchers devise new weapon in fight against cancer

Global News interviewed UBC researcher Wilfred Jefferies who has helped to develop a new tool in the fight against cancer.

Jefferies, a scientist at UBC’s Michael Smith Laboratories, explained how his research has shown that our immune system can outsmart cancer cells.

“Our recent study has allowed us to identify a gene signature involving a protein called interleukein-33 which when lost during the evolution to the metastatic form of cancer… the cells actually lose the ability to be recognized by the immune system, so they become invisible,” he said.
