Council questioning Calgary’s Olympic bid committee

Tsur Somerville, a professor at UBC’s Sauder School of Business, was interviewed by CTV Calgary for a story on Calgary’s potential bid for the 2026 Olympics.

Questions are being raised about the team that will decide if the city should put in a bid for the Games. Seven of the 17 voting members have direct links to Olympics and Paralympics.

Somerville weighed in on the economic impact of the event on Calgary.

“All the good things that get pitched come with a price because you have to raise prices down the road to pay for them so we don’t see benefits in house prices, we don’t see benefits in housing starts, we don’t see benefits in overall employment,” Somerville said.
