Sex assault concerns lead to changes at universities

A UBC Safewalk program including UBC athletes was featured in the Vancouver Sun.

Football players are part of a group that works shifts from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. escorting people who feel unsafe walking alone on campus. This program comes as universities work on improving systems to deal with sexual violence.

“I think it’s great that on our campus — but also campuses across Canada — that people are talking about this now and there’s a level of awareness, engagement and education that I just don’t think has been there in the past,” said Sara-Jane Finlay, UBC’s associate vice-president for equity and inclusion. “That’s just crucial to being able to change the culture.”

The Vancouver Sun also reported on the pervasiveness of sexual violence issues at universities.
