Working while sick is an American thing

Jennifer Berdahl, a professor at the Sauder School of Business at UBC, was quoted in a Huffington Post story on the trend for working while sick.

Berdahl said that showing total commitment to one’s job at the cost of one’s health and family time is part of a masculinity contest in the workplace–particularly in traditionally male professions such as business consulting and law.

“Complete work devotion isn’t necessarily a man’s thing, but it’s been constructed that way,” Berdahl said.
