Referendum textbook B.C. populism, says prof

An upcoming referendum asking voters to approve building a new city hall and civic centre in West Kelowna is an example of B.C.’s populist tradition, says UBC Okanagan professor Carey Doberstein.

Doberstein told CBC that the downside is the possibility of low voter turnout.

“When we see very few people…participate in these referendums it does undermine the argument that referendums are good,” he said.
