An Economist article on tall wood construction emphasized wood’s long history as construction material due to its aesthetic qualities, weight and low carbon footprint. The article mentioned a five-storey pagoda in the Nara prefecture of Japan, which is thought to be at least 1,400 years old; a 14-storey block of flats in Norway; and UBC’s 18-storey wooden dormitory, Brock Commons, which is expected to be completed in 2017.
