China’s satellite and the new arms race

UBC digital media and global affairs professor Taylor Owen and international relations student Robert Gorwa discussed quantum technologies in an op-ed for Foreign Affairs. They wrote that the new generation of quantum research being conducted in research labs around the world is making significant breakthroughs with serious implications to global peace and security.

U.S. rivals are eager to develop quantum communications, with China working on a massive, potentially unhackable quantum communications network, likely in a bid to thwart digital espionage. Another implication of quantum research is the latest advances could enable states “to reclaim some of the ground that they have lost to decentralizing digital technologies such as the World Wide Web and mobile networks.”
