Antibiotics during infancy Increases Type 1 diabetes risk in mice

The Scientist highlighted UBC Okanagan research in a story on the link between antibiotics and diabetes.

The 2015 UBC paper found a link between antibiotic use and diabetes in non-obese diabetic mice. The team gave the mice antibiotics every day of the animals’ lives.

Though the study implicated the microbiome more conceptually, “one really important contribution of this [present] paper is that it’s very realistic,” said study coauthor Deanna Gibson, a biology professor at UBC’s Okanagan campus. She said babies could receive three courses of antibiotics in the first few months of life.
