Effects of new foreign homebuyer tax remain to be seen

Xinhua interviewed UBC economics professor Thomas Davidoff for a story on the effects of the new homebuyer tax.

“I think it’s a good step and it’s politically very popular here,” he said.

Davidoff said he is part of a group that believes a property tax would be more effective if it targeted only property buyers who don’t pay income tax in B.C. regardless of their nationality.

The story also appeared in Shanghai Daily and People’s Daily.

A similar story on CBC and Yahoo Finance quoted Davidoff as saying that Victoria, Kelowna and Seattle are likely alternatives for families who can’t afford to live in Vancouver.
