Jail program gives moms a new start, helps babies develop

Maclean’s published a Canadian Press story on a mother-child program in jails and interviewed Dr. Ruth Elwood Martin, director of UBC’s Collaborating Centre for Prison Health and Education.

Mother-child units give women access to prenatal and parenting skills programs before the birth and also provides facilities to care for their babies.

“Those babies have had a better chance in their life to start off than they otherwise would have,” said Martin.

The story also appeared in the Vancouver Sun, Times Colonist and Castanet.
