Homes of the futures: new technology to make life more exciting

A story in the South China Morning Post featured a new technology developed by UBC engineers that could be used in future homes.

Researchers found that coating little pieces of glass with very thin layers of metal such as silver leads to an increase in the amount of light that passes through.

“Engineers are constantly trying to expand the scope of materials that they can use for display technologies, and having thin, inexpensive, see-through components that conduct electricity will be huge,” said UBC engineering professor Kenneth Chau. “I think one of the most important implications of this research is the potential to integrate electronic capabilities into windows and make them smart.”
