Astronomers find tiny new dwarf planet on edge of our solar system

The Daily Mail highlighted an astronomy discovery that involved UBC physics and astronomy researcher Brett Gladman. A dwarf planet half the size of Britain was found in the most distant reaches of the solar system.

Gladman said the process of flipping through the pictures is time consuming for The Outer Solar System Origins Survey team whose goal is to learn how planets moved into their places when the solar system was young.

The team has found nearly 1,000 objects to this point. This discovery, analyzed in February, was shocking because of its size.

“This one was a monster. It was incredibly bright for us,” Gladman said.
