More collisions recorded on B.C. highways with raised speed limits

New transportation ministry data show that collision rates increased in almost half of the 33 highway zones where B.C. raised speed limits two years ago. However, the ministry believes the higher rates is due to other factors and not speed alone.

UBC civil engineer Tarek Sayed, who also analyzed the data, believes the increase can be attributed to the speed increases.

“We got an 11 per cent, statistically significant increase in injury and fatal collisions following the implementation of the speed limit increase,” he told the Globe and Mail.

“Lots of the studies are showing the same thing: after increasing the speed limits we get an increase in injury and fatal collisions,” he told CBC.

Other media outlets that covered the story included CTV, Vancouver Sun, Times Colonist, MSN, Indo-Canadian Voice and Castanet.
