Vancouver clinic prescribes medical-grade heroin to chronic addicts

The Ottawa Citizen included research by UBC professor Eugenia Oviedo-Jokes at the school of population and public health for a story on heroin use at Vancouver safe injection clinics.

The study found prescribed heroin was a safe and cost-effective treatment for those with a chronic addiction, and supervised injection sites should be more common in Canada.

“Instead of an unregulated market, you are part of the health care system: You are now receiving medication, not an unknown, illicit mixture,” Oviedo-Jokes said.
