Mayor prepared to act alone if B.C. doesn’t tax empty homes

Maclean’s published a Canadian Press story about Mayor Robertson’s proposed deadline for a Vancouver vacancy tax, and quoted UBC economist Thomas Davidoff.

Robertson announced if the province doesn’t commit by the Aug. 1 deadline, he wants the city to charge the new business tax and move the funds toward other affordable housing measures.

Davidoff called the proposal a “half-measure” saying, “(It’s) a step in the right direction, but probably hard to implement and not a broad enough base.”
