Premier wants First Nations artifacts returned from U.S. museums

The Vancouver Sun interviewed Sue Rowley, a curator at UBC’s Museum of Anthropology, following Premier Clark’s announcement that the province supports the recovery of First Nations artifacts from U.S. museums.

Rowley said the theft of ancestral remains and sacred belongings is still a significant concern for B.C.’s aboriginal communities.

“For many indigenous communities, their ancestors being ripped out of their resting places and locked away in museum cupboards is a serious issue. Sometimes, there was coercion involved,” she said.

The story also appeared in The Province.
