Nadine Caron’s trailblazing path as a First Nations surgeon

CBC interviewed Dr. Nadine Caron, Canada’s first female First Nations general surgeon and UBC alumnus, for the radio show The Current.

Caron won the 2016 Royal College Dr. Thomas Dignan Indigenous Health Award, presented on National Aboriginal Day. She was the first indigenous woman to graduate from UBC’s medical program and helped create the UBC Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health.

She knows how difficult it can be for indigenous people to get proper health care and shared her own experience.

“I remember this one time a surgeon came in. And he sat down and was like, ‘Phew, if I never operate on another Indian it’ll be too soon,” she recalled.

Caron was also interviewed for CTV News.
