One-fifth of population risks malnutrition as fish stocks decline

Motherboard interviewed William Cheung of UBC’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, for a story on the impact of declining fish stocks.

Nineteen per cent of the global population is at risk of nutritional deficiencies if fish stocks keep dropping since fish makes up more than 20 per cent of their food intake by weight.

“Massive coral bleachings are affecting reefs substantially,” Cheung said. “With climate change, events like this are predicted to increase.”
