Mongolia wearily faces elections

World Politics Review published an op-ed by Julian Dierkes, UBC professor at the Institute of Asian Research, on the political climate in Mongolia.

Dierkes wrote that Mongolians have few reasons to be inspired as their national election approaches and there is speculation that some areas will not see a 50 per cent voting rate.

“Two factors have combined to depress the Mongolian economy: world commodity prices and domestic political choices. No mining economy has been spared the impact of the global slump in commodity prices that is linked to a slowing down of the Chinese economy,” Dierkes wrote.
