Voice of America reported on medical genetics research by UBC and Vancouver Coastal Health scientists proving a genetic link to multiple sclerosis. The discovery could allow doctors to identify and treat the disease before symptoms show up.
Researchers looked at medical records for 2,000 Canadian families with family members who had MS. They found two families that carried a mutation, or a structural change, in the NR1H3 gene.
“You know, the more understanding we have of the mechanism of disease for all these families allows us to develop different treatments for different forms of the disease,” said lead author Carles Vilariño-Güell.
