How do drugs get banned for enhancing performance?

A story on NPR about performance-enhancing drugs included UBC research from the kinesiology department.

The World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Prohibited List Expert Group considers performance enhancement, impact on health, and whether or not taking the drug “goes against the spirit of the sport.”

Don McKenzie’s exercise physiology laboratory at UBC did some studies for WADA focusing on the asthma medication salbutamol, also known as albuterol.

Researchers defined a threshold that would allow people to take the drug if they needed it to treat asthma.
