LGBT community still vulnerable to violence and early death

A story in the National Post cited a decades old UBC study on the life expectancy of gay and bisexual men in Vancouver. In 1997, the study reported that their life expectancy was equal to that of men living in 1871.

The study also found that 42 per cent of the city’s gay male community would be dead before they turned 65 years old.

Data for the Vancouver study was gathered before antiretroviral treatment for AIDS began to increase the lifespans of people with HIV.

The article points out that the gay community is still a constant target of random violence among minority groups in Canada and gay populations have high suicide rates.

The story also appeared in the Vancouver Sun and the Province.
