UBC to name new president this Monday

UBC is expected to name a new president Monday, CBC News and other media outlets (Vancouver Sun, Times Colonist, News 1130Georgia Straight, Global NewsCastanetIndo-Canadian Voice) reported. The new leader will replace Martha Piper, who served for 10 months in a temporary capacity following the unexpected resignation of Arvind Gupta last summer.

Reports published Sunday speculated that Santa Ono, president of the University of Cincinnati, will be named to the post. Ono is a well-known biology researcher and the son of a Japanese-born professor who taught math at UBC five decades ago. The story appeared in Inside Higher Ed, Globe and Mail, Vancouver Sun, and Georgia Straight. Cincinnati’s Fox affiliate, WLWT, WCPO, WVXU, Cincinnati.com also covered the story.
