More tolls, fees coming to roads near you

The Province interviewed UBC economics professor Robin Lindsey for a story about ‘mobility pricing’ coming to Metro Vancouver roads.

The term means that drivers pay to use a road in order to reduce traffic congestion. The specifics of these fees are not yet determined.

“The bridges tend to be the pinch point so that’s where congestion is worse,” Lindsey said. “The danger is if you impose a higher toll on one link, you get traffic diversion.”

He said Metro Vancouver could evaluate distance-based pricing, which is seen as the most equitable form of mobility pricing because drivers pay for the time and use on roads regardless of where they live.
