A Vice article on Metro Vancouver being used as a potential tax haven mentioned research by UBC urban planner Andy Yan.
The article says that a large number of Canadian mailing addresses linked to offshore firms listed in the Panama Papers include Metro Vancouver’s wealthiest neighborhoods and suburbs.
Yan aimed to shed light on the impact of foreign capital on Vancouver housing. He found that most of recent home purchases in three high-end Vancouver neighbourhoods were made by people with non-Anglicised Chinese names, indicating that they were recent immigrants to Canada.
