Following the announcement that B.C. students will write fewer provincial exams, UBC education experts were interviewed for various media outlets.
“I think it is about time they made some changes to the assessment and standardized testing. I think this is actually moving in the right direction,” UBC education professor Don Krug told CBC News.
In an interview with the Vancouver Sun, Julian Dierkes, associate professor at UBC’s Institute of Asian Research, said educators in many East Asian countries say exams add to student stress. But parents often fight to keep the emphasis on exams.
Charles Ungerleider, professor emeritus of Educational Studies at UBC, spoke to News 1130 saying while many will welcome the changes, “I think the downsides of eliminating provincial exams far exceed the upside from the student standpoint.”
