UBC cancer researcher Trevor Dummer was quoted in a CBC article about a new infill product for artificial turf that will be installed in a Kerrisdale multi-use park amid claims that the current rubber could be carcinogenic.
The Vancouver Park Board decided to replace the crumb rubber with a new synthetically produced compound mix of plastic and rubber that produces less heat and is fully recyclable, called thermoplastic elastomer.
Dummer said while it’s not known if crumb rubber causes cancer, “If there is an alternative that’s as good as we what we already have, but doesn’t come with the possibility that there is a health concern, then yes, that’s great, and that’s reassuring for parents”.
