UBC students win $180,000 playing eSport League of Legends

Vancity Buzz reported on UBC students who won the collegiate electronic sports championship for the second year in a row, taking home $180,000 worth of scholarship prizes.

The video game athletes from UBC wrapped up their perfect 14-0 season with three more wins including the final at the North American Collegiate Championship.

“I think some people think of eSports as a stereotype of fighting games or Super Mario, but that’s not the case,” said UBC team member Bob Qin. “With eSports, you practice as a team, you have to spend just as many hours as a professional athlete. You have to play on a big stage in front of a lot of people. It’s really stressful.”
