Commenting on the redesign of arXiv, one of the first open-access science sites, UBC mathematician Izabella Laba says she isn’t keen on suggestions to add rating or commenting systems on the site.
“Even if the obvious trolls are discounted, the responses to a blog post, for example, can still be very different depending on whether the author is male or female,” Laba told Wired. “There is overwhelming evidence of that. Introducing Internet comments into professional evaluations would compound every known bias against underrepresented groups.”
