Opioids: A national crisis needs a federal response

A new Globe and Mail op-ed points out the U.S.’s concerted response to address prescription drug abuse and wonders when Canada will have its national strategy in place. The author, UBC PhD student Pauline Voon, calls on the federal government and national professional health bodies to take steps to improve education in pain and addiction and improve access to overdose prevention and addiction treatment.

“The time for national leadership is now,” said Voon, a research associate at the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.
