Latin America’s ‘pink tide’ appears to be over

UBC political scientist and Peru expert Max Cameron was interviewed in a Toronto Star article about the Peru election.

The frontrunner is Keiko Fujimori, a pragmatic politician who’s seen as a better alternative to more populist or leftist candidates. Cameron noted that the end of the commodities boom has made it harder for populists in Latin America.

“As times get tougher, it is harder for candidates who want to redistribute wealth, without inflicting pain on economic groups that can mobilize against you,” said Cameron.
