Opinion: 100 years of wise women

In a Vancouver Sun op-ed, Judy Illes, director of the National Core for Neuroethics at UBC; Elizabeth Croft, associate dean for education and professional development at UBC’s applied science faculty; and Simon Peacock, UBC dean of science, highlighted strides made in ensuring diversity at UBC.

However, while equal numbers of women and men enrol in sciences, women are disproportionately represented in programs like computer science. “As we look ahead to the next 100 years and the leadership that women and men in our universities must undertake to solve the enormous environmental, economic, social, health and technological challenges that face all of us, it is essential to move beyond arguments of equity to recognition of necessity,” the academics said.

This op-ed also appeared in the Ottawa Citizen and Saskatoon Star Phoenix.
