Another coffee perk? Reduced risk of MS

Discovery News featured a new study out of Sweden which showed that drinking a lot of coffee is associated with a reduced risk of developing multiple sclerosis.

The results were published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, with an accompanying editorial by two UBC scholars who weren’t involved in the study. “Although it remains to be shown whether drinking coffee can prevent the development of MS, the results of these thorough analyses add to the growing evidence for the beneficial health effects of coffee,” wrote José Maria Andreas Wijnands, a postdoctoral fellow, and Elaine Kingwell, a research associate at the UBC faculty of medicine, neurology department.
