Professor trains miners to use less mercury in gold mining

Radio Canada interviewed UBC mining professor Marcello Veiga, who is leading a project to educate small-scale miners in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador on ways to process gold using less mercury.

Mercury poisoning causes neurological damage and pollutes the environment, according to Veiga. By modifying their equipment and using alternative processing methods, miners can reduce their mercury exposure by up to 95 per cent.
