It gives me great pleasure to announce UBC Thunderbirds Men's Hockey will retain varsity status and the university will continue to provide the team's core funding on an ongoing basis.

Hockey is a 100-year-old sport here at UBC. It challenges athletes, inspires fans and engages with the community. UBC recognizes the team's proud legacy on campus and believes hockey can play an important role in building student and community engagement under the new Strategic Framework for Varsity.

That's why over the past year, university administrators, team supporters and alumni have worked hard to reach this point.

It's a partnership I'm hopeful will contribute to exceptional performance both on and off the ice in the years ahead.
