Giving a patient the right dose of anesthesia and keeping that level constant throughout surgery just got a bit easier, thanks to a new device made in Canada. The device, called iControl-RP, monitors the patient’s brainwaves and blood oxygen levels during surgery, allowing for anesthesia to be finely calibrated minute by minute.
UBC electrical and computer engineering professor Guy Dumont helped develop the device, which is being tested by Mark Ansermino, a pediatric anesthesiologist at B.C. Children’s Hospital.
