Outer Vancouver suburbs strongly reject tax

Commenting on the resounding rejection of a new sales tax to fund transit upgrades, UBC business professor Werner Antweiler said he wasn’t surprised at the opposition to the tax in the Fraser Valley, where major transit projects are largely invisible. He added that perhaps some voters were unhappy that the provincial government put Metro’s transit funding to a plebiscite while financing other major infrastructure projects.

In a similar article in News 1130, Lawrence Frank with UBC’s school of regional planning blames the government for putting funding to a public vote, saying that the public elects politicians so that they can make decisions for the public good.
